Hats off to Mrs. Rice

On October 13th, 2007, Amy Rice of Wakefield, Rhode Island, one of our favorite triathletes, finished on the podium at the Ford Ironman World Championships. The 128-pound, 45-year-old, married mother of one finished the event in an impressive 11:12:26.
Her splits are noteworthy. 1:01:52 for the swim, a brief 4:36 in T1. Then she sat down on the bike. Following her training regimen, Mrs. Rice dialed in the powertap to 150 watts and kept it in the zone, smooth as can be, finishing the ride in an impressive 5:49:31. After 6:05 in T2, she settled in for the run.
At mile 5, Mrs. Rice was having stomach issues, so she stopped for a nature break, evacuated the contents of her insides, and settled back in. She couldn’t ingest food, so she gutted out the run on nothing but Coca-Cola for a strong marathon of 4:10:24 and a total elapsed time of 11:12:26.
Kudos to Mrs. Rice. To balance work, motherhood, and be one of the best in the world is an extraordinary accomplishment.
