Laser sailing in Newport
Following a day of drudgery, I set out to do some Laser sailing in Newport. We had over 30 boats for the first race. Due to the cold, several hit the beach early. By the end of day, we were closer to the twenties in terms of number of boats on the line.
It is understandable why people went in early. I've never been so cold in my life. The laser is a wretchedly wet boat, and even under the best of circumstances, sailing lasers in February is a suffer fest. My scores got better as the day progressed, best race was the last, a ninth. Ended up 13th for the day, missing my goal of top ten by a scant six points. Can't be greedy. Almost capsized at least three times. New kayaking gloves from LL Bean were acceptable, but almost too grippy. Difficult to ease the main when it's that cold. As we de-rigged in the parking lot, the sun was still high in the sky. We have hpe that spring will arrive.
